Bedford began his journey in photography when he served in Viet Nam as a Navy Corpsman caring for combat wounded Marines. Images that he took during his three year tour of duty in Viet Nam were published in a book entitled 'The Innocents, A Photographic Essay of Vietnamese children during the War'. Upon his return to the continental United States and discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Washington's Physician Assistant Program and graduated in 1972.
